Alabama Allocates $500,000 to Expand Affordable Housing for Residents with Mental Health Needs

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — The Alabama Department of Mental Health (ADMH) has taken a significant step towards supporting residents with mental health needs by securing a $500,000 contract with Navigate Affordable Housing Partners, a Birmingham-based nonprofit. The contract aims to promote and increase affordable housing options for vulnerable populations, including those who are homeless or temporarily incarcerated.

This contract, approved by the legislative Contract Review Committee, will run through September 30, 2026, funded equally by federal and state resources. The focus will be on expanding the pool of available housing rather than directly covering rental costs.

“The contractor will provide performance-based professional services to secure, promote, increase, and facilitate statewide affordable supportive housing options for those with mental health problems who are homeless, in jails, and in emergency departments,” said Bryan Penn, ADMH’s department privacy officer.

Key Initiatives Under the Contract:
Increase Housing Supply: Work to boost the availability of affordable supportive housing.
Secure Subsidies and Resources: Navigate Affordable Housing Partners will actively seek subsidies and rental resources to benefit those with mental health needs.
Build Strategic Partnerships: The contract emphasizes fostering lasting partnerships between state agencies and third parties to enhance affordable housing initiatives.

Supporting Alabama’s Most Vulnerable
This initiative aligns with Alabama’s broader goals of providing stability, dignity, and opportunity for individuals facing mental health challenges. By bridging the gap between housing and mental health services, the program aims to reduce homelessness and support successful community reintegration for individuals exiting jails or emergency departments.
