Voting advocates in South Central Alabama are ramping up their efforts ahead of the November 5 general election — the first for the newly redrawn District 2!
Last month, nearly 40 dedicated community members gathered at the G.W. Carver Interpretive Museum in Dothan, Alabama, for an intense weekend of Community Action Training. Participants learned best practices for campaigns focused on fair pay, safety standards, and, most importantly, equitable voting access.
These trainings are essential for empowering volunteers and canvassers with the tools they need to organize and mobilize. Two of the three voting rights groups in attendance are reaching out to infrequent voters, while the third is dedicated to getting more people registered to vote.
“Organizing is essential to mobilizing communities,” says Rodriesha Russaw, Executive Director of The Ordinary People Society. “By creating spaces for community members to voice their concerns about the current political climate, we can engage those who have not been voting and ensure everyone’s voice is heard.”
The recent redrawing of District 2, now nearly 49% Black, is a crucial opportunity for ensuring fair representation in Alabama. Let’s continue working together to strengthen our democracy and advocate for equitable voting access! 🙌
